Ben Bortner, CFA
Founder and Managing Partner
Ben is the Founder and Managing Partner of Slack Water Capital®, where he leads the firm’s efforts to acquire and build enduring, service-oriented businesses across the United States.
With more than 16 years of experience investing in and operating businesses, Ben has spent his career at the intersection of capital allocation and hands-on operational leadership. In addition to serving as Managing Partner of Slack Water Capital®, he currently serves as Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GreenWorks Landscape Partners, a multi-branch landscape services platform with operations throughout Southern Florida. Under Ben’s leadership, GreenWorks has expanded through multiple acquisitions; expanded its digital presence; professionalized its operations; and built a culture focused on safety, quality, and long-term partnership.
Prior to founding Slack Water Capital®, Ben acquired and served as President & CEO of The Pool Man of Key West, which he led from 2019 through January 2023. During his tenure, Ben drove significant organic and acquisitive growth - more than doubling revenue and nearly quadrupling EBITDA - before successfully exiting the business in 2022.
Ben has been an active investor and board member in numerous small and medium-sized businesses since 2021. His current board roles include Atlantic Waters, DryEco Green Cleaners, iMold, Jones Skips, and QBM Services. Previous board experience includes McHale Roofing, DACS Asphalt & Concrete, E-Konomy Pools, and Strobes N’ More. Earlier in his career, Ben worked as an investment analyst at several value-focused investment firms, including White Bison Capital, Southeastern Asset Management, and Saturna Capital.
Ben lives in Key West, Florida, and in his free time enjoys being on the water and fly fishing for permit, tarpon, and bonefish.
